skip to content music boutique film music our views menu home blog the beginning…… of the movies… friendsorchestra/hike in to time machine fusion – indian music- indian film music. about us contact us hello world scroll down to content posts posted on october 13, 2017 may 29, 2018 music..the way it was….and the way it changed let us take a hike in time machine and travel to the dawn of twentieth century india. first thing we realise is that the world is, a lot less noisier….no sound of the automobiles…no electricity that would run noisy machines. but one thing that was all pervasive was music and songs ….for every occasion ….there were songs when the girls attained puberty.. when the girls longed for their love … whenever there was wedding….when the girl left her parents’ home….when she arrived at the husband’s household…when a child was born…lullabies for the children…songs praising gods….at homes, at temples or when the gods were carried around in procession ……people sang while they were working in the paddy fields….boatman sang when he rowed his boat…fisherman sang while going to the sea ….and his wife sang while waiting and praying for his safe return… people sang welcoming the spring and rains….people sang when they carried or moved something heavy…. and all these songs were in all kinds forms…solos, choruses, with the accompaniment of instruments or without…. and then, there were people who learned, taught and performed classical music…. and when the sun set in and when rest of the world got ready for the night, another world readied to start its day…the world of the music, dance and poetry… of mushiraas and mehfils ……courtesans…the dancing girls or nautch girls …the poets….singers…composers…. and their patrons… when the lamps were lit….musicians tuned their instruments….singers cleared their throats…..the nautch girls adjusted their costumes and jewelleries …. the poets went through their poems one last time before presenting ….. importantly, in all these activities, there was always a direct rapport between the performer and the audience….that is, the child knew that his or her mother was singing the lullaby…. patrons watched and heard, the singers singing and the musicians playing their instruments… if you were too poor or too young to be allowed inside a mehfil….or from a lower caste who were forbidden entry into temples and other public places….you stood outside at a distance and heard….may be you would get a glimpse of the performers when they ventured out….. but all this was about to change….great brains were working on something in far off america …. let us travel a bit further into the past….the year is 1877. ….we see thomas alva edison inspecting a device made according to his instructions… we see his assistant cranking the device by hand, rotating a cylinder wrapped in tinfoil….we see edison shouting ‘mary had a little lamb’ into the mouth of a horn attached to the device….we see a needle (stylus) moving vertically, making indentations on the tinfoil….then, the assistant removes the stylus and attaches another stylus and starts to crank the device….and we hear the device playing back edison’s voice rendering ‘mary had a little lamb’, although feebly…. now it is done…a sound a could be recorded and played back….it was one of those rare moments when an experiment was a success at the the first attempt itself….edison called the device ‘phonogram’. he stopped moving ahead as he did not see much use for it except in offices and turned his attention to incandescent lights…. he was in the dark about the potential of his phonogram in the world of entertainment…. edison with his phonogram…. moreover, his tinfoil can be played back only once…. enters alexander graham bell.. ..he discovers that cylinder coated with wax could be played back many times….he called his improved device ‘graphaphone’ but two problems remained…. one was the need to crank the cylinder manually, at the time of recording and playback… and the second bigger problem was the impossibility of making copies…. this could be better illustrated by the story of george washington johnson ….he was making his living as a street entertainer, in new york, whistling and singing popular songs…. new york phonographic co and new jersey phonographic co, invited him to whistle and sing on wax phonographic cylinders for a fee of 20 cents for a two minute performance. he recorded two popular songs called, ‘whistling coon’ and ‘the laughing song’ on wax coated cylinders….they became hugely popular and more than 25000 cylinders were sold….this also meant that mr.johnson recorded as many times and earned 20 cents for every recording…and made him the first african american star of cylindrical phonograms …. agreed… it was great talent ….but doing this for more than 25000 times !!!!!???? come on….. this could not go on…. and something needed to be done…. that was exactly what happened….we move forward to 1887…. emile berliner, an immigrant from germany, is singing into the mouth of the horn attached to a hand-cranked device, another nursery rhyme…’twinkle, twinkle little star’….a stylus moves over a zinc disc, not wax cylinder…spirally, not vertically….he gives it an acid wash..and plays it back…. berliner’s voice with german accent intact, is heard….’tvinkle, tvinkle little star…hov i vonder vat you are..’ he called his device gramophone… the twin problems of the need to crank by hand and the impossibility of mass production of copies…. he and his friend and partner mr. elridge johnson worked together and came out with the solution of using spring mechanism, as used in clocks, to make the disk rotate evenly at the time of recording and playback…. he made use of the technology of electroplating to make multiple copies from a master….at first, he used glass, then he used vulcanised rubber…(the rubber discs were much used for sometime) ….finally settled on shellac made from the resin ‘lac’ ….( 75% of the ‘lac’ was produced in india ). shellac was replaced with polyvinyl in the late thirties. photograph of berliner’s original gramophone… 300 × 214 – ethw.org emile berliner and his gramophone… now, the world is waiting to be conquered… he did just that by taking efforts to popularise his gramophone….he had famous artists to perform for his discs… and then, he sent his assistant mr. fredrick gaisberg to london, with a recording machine and instructions and introductions….fredrick recorded many famous artists and in 1899…. he also recorded 15 ‘hindu records’ as he called them…the recordings were recitations of the epic ramayana, hymns of guru nanak, urdu verses of mirza galib and verses from quran…. the artists were capt. bhola nath, dr. harnaamdas and ahmed….these were the first indian voices to be recorded, although they were recorded in london… fredrick traveled to russia, japan and china and other parts of the world to make records… and of course, he came to india in 1902…settled in great eastern hotel, calcutta… on november 8, he recorded a bengali song ‘ami sajani kushumari’ sung by sashimukhi, all of 14 years of age and another song by phanibala, all of 16 years of age….unfortunately, the records are not available to comment on them….but gaisberg was not impressed with their ‘miserable voices’. three days later, he recorded a ‘khyal’ sung by gauhar jaan….she was already a famous singer and was in much demand for her performances….she was paid rs.3000/ for the reording, which was reasonable according to gaisberg…..the song when released, became a huge hit and gauhar jaan later recorded some 600 songs in various indian languages…. to gauhar jaan goes the credit for condensing and rendering a song, normally performed elaborately, to the three and half minutes format for a record, without sacrificing the beauty of the composition. gauhar jaan led a life opulence and ostentation….gaisberg observed that she wore different jewelry every day….she supposed to have spent rs.20000/, to host a party when he
